Faculty Retirement Resources

Choosing the right time and process for retirement can be difficult, but several partners at Brandeis can work with you as you consider your options. Make sure you talk to your Chair about your plans and read over the options available in the Pathways to Retirement Plan. If you have questions or concerns about the timing and additional Faculty benefits, please reach out to the Faculty Affairs Office.

The process of retirement has several aspects to it:

  • Reach out to Human Resources for information about health insurance and calculating your retirement benefits.
    • Health Insurance Continuation for Certain Staff Terminating at Age 62: For those staff who decide to retire between the ages of 62 and 65 and who have completed 20 years of benefits-eligible service prior to retirement, the University will continue to contribute toward the cost of the health insurance premium which is in place at the time of retirement. The University's contribution will cease when the retired staff member attains age 65 and is eligible for Medicare benefits. If your spouse is age 65 or over at the time of your retirement then they should consider enrolling in Medicare. This benefit may be altered, amended or terminated by the University at anytime without notice.
  • The Provost’s Office maintains a list of Privileges for Retired Faculty and there are resources as well for retired faculty applying for grants.
  • Deans are responsible for initiating retirement agreements for faculty in their schools. These agreements are reviewed and approved by the Provost.

We suggest starting conversations about retirement at least one semester before you plan to stop teaching. Make sure to check in with HR, your Chair, and a representative from your Dean’s office. We have prepared the checklist below to outline the necessary steps.

Checklist for Departing Faculty, Including Full-Time Tenure Line Faculty, Renewable Contract Faculty and Emeriti

Full-time faculty should review the following list as they prepare to leave, or retire from, Brandeis. Faculty should also reach out to the Benefits section of the Office of Human Resources well before the end of their faculty appointment, for information on how their benefits may be impacted.
