Climate Justice Initiatives

The Brandeis Climate and Sustainability Alliance — composed of a diverse group of students, staff, faculty and club representatives — provides a space for climate-conscious individuals and groups within the Brandeis community to share their ideas, support each other's efforts and work together to achieve common goals.

In 2022-23, Brandeis launched the Year of Climate Action a year-long effort involving curricular and co-curricular programming that catalyzed and deepened our understanding of climate change as a social justice issue. The focus expanded our dedication to tackling this urgent problem in courses, course projects, student events, guest speakers, student activism and more.

Institutional Initiatives

  • The Brandeis Decarbonization Action Plan — Together with a team of experts, Brandeis' Capital Programs group is developing a plan to transform energy use, reduce emissions on campus and set the university on a path to carbon neutrality.
  • New organic land management practices — Over the course of 2022, Brandeis piloted several organic land management practices. During the trial, Brandeis' Grounds team replaced the herbicide Roundup, which contains glyphosate, with an organic non-toxic treatment instead. Brandeis is also replacing a pesticide used to treat grubs with a non-toxic organic product on an as-needed basis.
  • New faculty resources — Faculty funding, workshops, lesson plans, and other pedagogical resources are now provided by the Office of Sustainability.
  • Sustainability dashboard — Publicly available for viewing, the dashboard provides the most up-to-date sustainability performance data in the following categories: carbon footprint, solar installations and waste diversion rates.
