Community Health Internship Program (CHIP)
COMPACT’s Community Health Internship Program (CHIP) provides impactful internship opportunities for Brandeis undergraduate students committed to advancing population health in Waltham. In summer 2026, we are pleased to partner with five extraordinary community-based organizations.
Recognizing that the social determinants of health are embedded in the places where we live, work, play, and raise our families, CHIP offers an innovative, place-based, mentored, team internship model. Throughout the summer, all interns will meet weekly, as a team, with Professors Sara Shostak and Darren Zinner. Team meetings will provide you with structured opportunities for reflection, skill building, and professional development. They will also allow us to think together, as a team, about what you are learning about the social determinants of health in Waltham, from the perspective of the organization where you are working and the population that it serves.
CHIP interns will receive $4,500 as a stipend for 200 hours of work over 8 weeks (this includes the hours spent in team meetings). Practically, this means that you will be at your internship site for ~22 hours/week, though the days/times will vary based on the projects and programs you are engaging. CHIP will begin on June 15, 2026.
While all CHIP internships focus on the social determinants of health, they include very different projects! For each, you will have access to support from faculty and staff at Brandeis, as well as at the host organizations.
CHIP is generously supported by the Louis D. Brandeis Legacy Fund for Social Justice, which supports a wide range of activities that reflect the University's commitment to social justice.

This internship provides an exciting opportunity to create a plan and gather data that will be critical in the process of creating the foundation for universal preschool in the city of Waltham. The internship will include research on the social determinants of health related to education and what programs can be implemented that promote learning and overall cognitive and social-emotional development. This process will include conversations with current staff and observation of WFS summer programs. This internship is ideally suited to students interested in the health and well-being of immigrant families and eager to build their skills in education and applied research.

Our interns play an essential role on a small team making a huge impact! We are only two full time staff, so our interns need to be prepared to jump right in. This position is fast-paced and client-facing; the successful candidate must be comfortable working directly with people experiencing homelessness, mental illness, substance use disorders, and domestic violence.
After thorough training, our interns usually take on their own caseload, meaning you can expect to meet with people every hour in one-on-one appointments who are facing a range of challenges. This is NOT an internship where you'll be doing coffee runs! While it is a lot of work, we can promise you'll learn a lot and gain invaluable professional experience.

This internship will support outreach conducted under the federal McKinney-Vento (MKV) Homeless Education Act. Each summer, we connect with all families identified as experiencing homelessness to confirm current housing status, ensure they understand their rights under MKV, and link them with community resources. As part of this internship, you will assist with direct outreach, audit existing protocols and make recommendations for improvement, and review and refine documentation and data-collection practices to strengthen our ability to assess needs and impact. All work will be grounded in a commitment to equity, cultural sensitivity, and trauma-informed communication.
