Frederick Alt, professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School, received the Szent-Györgyi Prize from the National Foundation for Cancer Research. Arthur Caplan, a prominent bioethicist at New York University, will oversee a pilot program funded by Johnson & Johnson that will investigate the experimental-medicine request process. Arthur has written extensively about the “compassionate use” of experimental drugs. Steven Swerdlow, head of the Division of Hematopathology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, received the inaugural Berard-Dorfman Founders Award from the Society for Hematopathology in March.
