Interpretive Discussion: Engaging Students in Text-Based Conversations with Sophie Haroutunian-Gordon

Teachers in all subject areas are seeking ways to help students engage with and meaningfully discuss many different types of texts (e.g., literary, historical, scientific). Sophie Haroutunian-Gordon presented an interactive workshop on “interpretive discussion,” her approach to effective text discussion, and guided teachers through a carefully refined process for preparing, leading and reflecting on these conversations. This approach can be used with students of all ages.

Sophie Haroutunian-Gordon is Professor emerita, School of Education and Social Policy, and the former director of the Master of Science in Education Program, at Northwestern University. She conducts research on topics related to the philosophy of education. Her book, “Interpretive Discussion: Engaging Students in Text-Based Conversations was published in March 2014.
