Reduce & Reuse

What's better than recycling? Not using the items at all! Brandeis is working hard to reduce waste.

Buy Used and Donate

If you have usable materials that you don't want- post a My Brandeis Classified ad to see if others want them. If you are looking out for free items sign up to noticed whenever there are new ads. Students, before you move out- please use the classifieds or donate items.

Three Steps to "Drink Responsibly" and Avoid Bottled Water

drfReduce- avoid purchasing bottled water or drinks in disposable containers if drinking "for here."

Reuse- use mugs, reusable cups, or bottles! You will get a discount on drinks purchased in a reusable container.

Recycle -It's easy to recycle plastic, metal, or glass containers. Empty any extra liquids and place in any labeled recycling bin, even one with "paper type" lids- recycling is all collected together now! Did you know that paper coffee cups are not recyclable-but the lids and sleeves are. Better yet use a mug!

Brandeis is taking actions to reduce bottled water use. Bottled water use has implications for global warming pollution as well as additional environmental and social impacts. There is a great amount of energy wasted and there is uncertainty over the long-term health effects created by plastic containers made of petroleum products. While bottles can be recycled the process is still very energy intensive. The Pacific Institute estimates that the total amount of energy embedded in our use of bottled water can be as high as the equivalent of filling a plastic bottle one quarter full with oil. The Brandeis community is encouraged to avoid purchasing bottled water for events and daily use.

Tips to Reduce Paper Consumption:

E-mail: Read email on screen and use e-mail over hard-copy memos whenever possible

Faxes: Avoid using oversets

Printing: Print double sided - computers in the ICC and the Green Room offer double-sided printing.

Reuse: Blank sides of printed documents can be used as scratch paper or to print other documents

Latte: Utilizing LATTE for uploading papers, grading and class discussions

Give + Go

Give + Go collection happens every spring semester. spring 2013 begins on May 2 and continued through senior move-out on May 19.

What is Give + Go?

During spring semester move out, Brandeis students often leave behind a large amount of stuff on campus. Crazy? Yes- but we are here to make sure something good can come out of it! Give + Go is a community wide effort to reduce waste and donate tons of needed goods to the local community. We even keep some stuff to resell for students in the fall- to help reduce even more waste- and this sale funds the big collection operation. It's a win-win-win!

When you move out, please help needy people and reduce waste. Please give items in good condition and place neatly in labeled locations. Give + Go is coordinated by the Waltham Group, Community Living, S.E.A., Facilities, and Eco-Reps. Thank you for giving!

Yes, please give:

  • Clean clothing, shoes, sheets, and towels
  • Household goods (dishes etc.)
  • Electronics (microwaves, fridges, and lamps- with cords!)
  • Furniture (small items)
  • Books
  • School Supplies- markers, scissors, lab goggles, anything kids can use in class!
  • Toiletries (Open shampoo and laundry detergent are OK. Everything else must be closed.)
  • Food (not open)

No, we can't take:

  • Anything dirty or broken
  • Open food
  • Mattresses or futons
  • Pillows. Not joking. Take them home.
  • Foam toppers. Gross. Throw it out or take it home.
  • Electronics without the cords. Who could use that again?!

We have a limited amount of time to sort and move items. Please be respectful of volunteers' time—only give requested items in a clean and orderly fashion.

Move Out Waste Dumpsters

During Move Out only, special dumpsters will be placed near each residential area where trash and recycling can be combined.   Contractors will sort the trash from the recycling at an offsite facility. You can place regular trash and any recyclable material- paper, cardboard, plastics, glass, and metals in the special dumpsters. Please keep all food waste inside plastic bags to avoid mess and as usual keep liquids out.

We are excited to offer this new option and reduce Move Out Waste! Remember, inside buildings and any non residential buildings you still have to sort recyclables from trash.
