It's never too early to investigate what fellowship opportunities are available to you. However, in the first year, it is also important that you explore a range of courses, and give yourself time to get acclimated to university work. Study broadly, and be open to discovering some unexpected academic interests!
You are always welcome to attend one of the fellowship information sessions that run throughout the year. As early as spring of your first year, you can apply for either the Schiff Undergraduate Fellows Program or the Undergraduate Research Program. Both of these grants provide students and their faculty mentors with the necessary support to carry out research projects over the summer or during the academic year.
Lastly, take steps so that your faculty know who you are: ask questions in class, utilize office hours. Building these relationships are often the foundation for engaging in research of your own.
