Bruchim Haba’im: UTF Fellows Kick Off a New Year of Jewish Learning and Teaching

On Sunday, September 14, the Undergraduate Teaching Fellows (UTF) program launched its new year with a spirited and joyful kick-off seminar at Brandeis University. For the first time in its ten-year history, UTF has expanded beyond Brandeis, welcoming students from Northeastern University, Emerson College, and Brown University alongside Brandeis fellows. Supported by the Mandel Foundation, this expansion marks an exciting new chapter in supporting undergraduates teaching in supplemental settings, with educational theory, pedagogy, and tools to support them in becoming thoughtful, reflective Jewish educators.

The kick-off began with playful activities that underscored the value of connection, storytelling, and discovery—skills as essential in a classroom as they are in community-building.

Fellows were then guided in a text study of a Talmudic tale about Rabbi Nehunia, a teacher whose wisdom and humility still inspire. Through havruta (paired study) and group discussion, fellows reflected on the values and responsibilities that come with teaching.

Next, fellows explored their own journeys into Jewish education through the creative exercise “Destination Jewish Education.” Drawing personal maps of their paths, they shared formative experiences that shaped their decision to teach. These journeys then framed conversations about child development, as fellows considered what it means to meet learners at their developmental stage while bringing their own stories into the classroom.

After dinner, the seminar shifted to blessings for the new year. Fellows walked around images posted in the room, selecting one that captured their hopes for themselves as educators. Writing blessings on colorful Post-its, they created a visual tapestry of aspiration and commitment.

The evening closed in a circle, as each fellow shared something learned and a question they hoped to carry forward. The refrain was clear: Jewish education is holy work, and this year’s fellows are ready to enter their classrooms with curiosity, courage, and community.

With apples, honey, and the energy of new beginnings, the UTF kick-off set the tone for a year of growth, dialogue, and inspiration.
