Talmud and Rabbinic Formation

A shelf of volumes from the Babylonian Talmud.Teachers of rabbinic literature in rabbinical schools operate under the assumption that studying rabbinic literature, and Talmud in particular, is central to the training of rabbis and, more specifically, to rabbinic identity formation.

However, this assumption about the centrality of Talmud to rabbinic identity formation has not been interrogated. Through a series of classroom studies at a variety of rabbinical schools, this project aims to define what we mean by rabbinic identity formation and the complex ways in which Talmud study is a part of this formative process.

This work will participate in and contribute to larger conversations about pedagogy, religion and identity formation.
