1. Can I receive Legal Studies (LGLS) credit for courses taken overseas?

Yes, students may take up to a maximum of two courses for the minor. Students on the Brandeis in The Hague  program will have all courses count towards the Legal Studies minor.

2. Is it possible to take LGLS 10a abroad? 

No. This course is required to be taken at Brandeis.

3. Is it possible to complete the internship requirement while studying abroad or on Brandeis in The Hague program?

Yes, for Brandeis in The Hague programs and with advanced permission for other programs.

Legal Studies Study Abroad Liaison

Generally, students who study abroad for one semester have no difficulty completing the Legal Studies minor. Those who choose to study abroad for an entire year may need to work with their advisor or the Study Abroad Liaison to develop a plan that will allow them to finish the major on time.

To assist students with their academic choices abroad and to help answer any questions about receiving minor credit while abroad, each academic department and program has assigned a faculty member to serve as the Study Abroad Liaison. Legal Studies majors who plan to study abroad should speak with the study abroad liaison before they go abroad, and again once they have returned from study abroad.

Receiving Credit in Legal Studies

Students wishing to receive Legal Studies credit for work done off campus during the academic year should discuss their desired coursework with their study abroad liaison for Legal Studies. After returning from abroad, download and complete the electronic Petition to Request Substitution for a Requirement form. 

Funding Information 

The Institute for International Public Policy (IIPP) Fellowship Program provides underrepresented minority students with the education and training needed to successfully enter, advance and lead in international affairs careers.

Brandeis Scholarships for Study Abroad are available for students receiving need-based financial aid. Application materials are available online and in our office.

Boren Scholarships, The National Security Education Program (NSEP) Boren Scholarships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to add an important international and language component to their educations.

Benjamin A. Gilman Undergraduate Scholarships Program provides undergraduate students with limited financial means with up to $5,000 to pursue overseas study. Students who plan to study and receive the Gilman Scholarship are also eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program.
