Scholarships

A few examples of outside funding and Brandeis scholarships have been provided below, as well as some web sites which may be helpful. Please also refer to the Study Abroad Resource Library, which contains research books on funding for overseas study.

Scholarships for Brandeis Students:

Brandeis Scholarships for Study Abroad are available for students receiving need-based financial aid. There is also one scholarship for study in China available to any student regardless of their financial aid status. Application materials are available online and in our office (Usdan 127). The deadline for the Academic Year 2009-2010 (Fall 2009, Spring 2010 and Summer 2010) is March 6, 2009

Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS) Travel Grant is available to all students wishing to study at DIS in Copenhagen, Denmark.

interstudy offers special scholarships for Brandeis students who wish to study in South Africa.



National Scholarships
1. Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan provide assistance to students with travel and living expenses incurred during a semester or year in Japan. The deadline for students who will be studying in Japan beginning in Fall 2009 is April 6 , 2009.

2. Benjamin A. Gilman Undergraduate Scholarships Program provides undergraduate students with limited financial means with up to $5000 to pursue overseas study. Students who plan to study Critical Need Languages and receive the Gilman Scholarship are also eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program. The deadline for Fall semester 2009 is April 7, 2009.

3. The National Security Education Program (NSEP) Boren Scholarships funds students to study outside Western Europe for a semester or a year. The campus deadline for the NSEP scholarship for Academic Year 09-10 (includes summer 2009, fall 2009 and spring 2010) was noon on January 15, 2009.

4. BUTEX (British Transatlantic Exchange Association) offers a 500 Pound scholarship to students who have been offered a place as a study abroad student in a UK university which is a member of BUTEX. The deadline for the Academic Year 2009-2010 scholarship is August 1, 2009.

5. DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) created the Undergraduate Scholarship Program to support undergraduate US students interested in studying, doing research, or completing an internship for a 4-10 month period in Germany during the German academic year. The deadline for the Academic Year 2009-2010 was January 31, 2009.

6. The Institute for International Public Policy (IIPP) Fellowship Program provides underrepresented minority students with the education and training needed to successfully enter, advance and lead in international affairs careers. Students apply to the fellowship as Sophomores and participate in a comprehensive program of summer policy institutes, study abroad, intensive language training, internships, graduate study, mentoring and career development. In addition to funding other components of the program, the fellowship covers up to one half the cost of one semester abroad. Please visit their web site for application details.

7. The Sally Whitcher Awards provide two $500 travel scholarships each semester, funded by Hostelling International USA – Eastern New England Council. The deadline for Summer/Fall Semester 2009 is Friday, April 17, 2009 at 5:00pm.

8. The Department of State's Critical Language Scholarships provide funding for intensive overseas summer study of "critical need" languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Indic (Bangla, Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu), Korean, Persian, Russian, and Turkish. The deadline for Summer 2009 was November 14, 2008. The new deadline for Summer 2010 is TBA.

9. The MASA Grants provide $1000 for Jewish undergraduates studying in Israel. The current application is for programs beginning no earlier than July 2009.

Many institutions will offer grants and scholarships for students studying abroad on their program. Listed below are the some of the more popular programs for Brandeis students. Check with your individual program to see if they offer any merit and/or need-based scholarships.
