Credit for Prior Service

Rehired employees are eligible for an adjusted service date for purposes of determining vacation leave accrual and employer retirement contributions. This policy does not apply to other benefits such as tuition reimbursement.

Applicability

This policy applies to all rehired benefit eligible staff, faculty and postdoctoral scholars for vacation accrual and employer retirement contributions

The is policy applies to vacation accrual only for postdoctoral scholars. Postdoctoral scholars do not receive employer contributions to retirement plan.

Guidelines

A former employee of Brandeis University will be eligible for prior service credit resulting in an adjusted service date. The policy grants credit for previous employment at the University as a faculty, staff or postdoctoral scholars.

The policy does not grant credit for previous employment at the University as a temporary employee/faculty, graduate student worker, or affiliate worker.

The policy grants adjusted service based on one's previous length of employment at Brandeis University as outlined in the following table:

Prior Length of Service at Brandeis Allowable Length of Break in Service

Less than 1 year

None
Between 1 and 5 years 2 year break
Between 5 and 10 years 3 year break
Between 10 and 20 years 4 year break
More than 20 years 5 year break

Should a former employee meet the above requirements and be rehired by the University an adjusted service date will be calculated using the following formula:

  • adjusted service date= rehire date - (original end date - original start date)

If an employee left for a second time and is eligible for an adjusted service date, the previous adjusted service date (if any) will serve as the original start date.

Responsibilities

The Office of Human Resources will make the determination of staff eligibility for prior service credit. Members of the faculty are required to notify the Office of Human Resources for credit for prior service.

This policy is for general guidance only. It does not create an employment contract or any right to continued employment at Brandeis University.
