How do I fulfill the writing intensive requirement?
- Students admitted prior to the 2019-20 academic year must complete, before graduation, one writing intensive course and either a second writing intensive course or an oral communication course. For more information, consult the director of the University Writing Program.
- For students admitted in the fall semester of the 2019-20 academic year or later, the writing intensive — or writing in the major — requirement will be fulfilled according to guidelines developed by each major. You may need to take a course, a practicum or compile a portfolio of writing. If you have questions, consult the director of the University Writing Program or the undergraduate advising head for your major(s).
I have more than one major. What should I do?
Students admitted prior to the 2019-20 academic year are not required to take a writing intensive course in their major(s). In recognition of the fact that writing is oftentimes discipline specific, students admitted in the 2019-20 academic year or later who elect to complete more than one major will need to complete all of the requirements, including the writing intensive — or writing in the major — requirement, for each major.
Do I need to fulfill the requirements before I graduate? Can I get another course designated writing intensive retroactively?
All writing requirements must be fulfilled prior to graduation. No courses will be designated writing intensive retroactively by student petition.
