What to Expect
This summer, more than 200 elite high school students from around the world will gather to explore the future of medicine with renowned leaders in the field. Delegates can expect exciting discussions, behind-the-scenes insight into the dynamic world of healthcare and opportunities to create bonds that will last a lifetime. They will explore the exciting and fast-changing landscape of medical innovation through visits to the top-tier clinical and research institutions for which Boston is renowned.
Summit delegates will challenge themselves by tackling the same kind of problem-based learning cases that medical students are studying in their classrooms.
The 230 Summit delegates are outstanding students from around the world who will be juniors and seniors in the 2018-19 school year. Each delegate is invited and has applied for acceptance into the program. These are high school students who have already shown interest in pursuing careers in healthcare.
Delegates have an academic record that places them among the top students nationwide and typically rank in the top 5-10% of their high school class, with challenging courses and strong academic performance.
Delegates hear from leading researchers, practitioners, physicians and CEOs. Speakers will engage delegates on key trends, issues and developments. This rigorous and enlightening dialogue will help enable delegates to chart their own careers in this fast-changing field that is entering one of the greatest eras of medical advances in the history of mankind.
Delegates will visit leading institutions conducting the patient care and research that are leading to discoveries that will forever change the field of medicine.
With experience in the field and knowledge from the speakers, delegates will then engage in the exploration and debate of the great medical issues of our time. They will work with their elite peers in high-energy role-playing simulations where they will develop their leadership and team building skills in ways that will influence their learning for years to come. They will solve problems as they explore the creative, practical and ethical tensions inherent in medicine and healthcare.
Finally, delegates will develop lifelong friendships and bonds with their peers, while taking advantage of the many cultural and historic sites and experiences Boston provides like the New England Aquarium and Faneuil Hall.
During the Summit's intensive educational programs, students—in small groups—will be led by faculty mentors who have extensive experience in facilitating medical concepts learning.
Delegates will also learn from our resident faculty of esteemed professors, scholars who are actively engaged with the scientific concepts and policy developments that are shaping the field of 21st century medicine and healthcare. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to network with the nation's top medical professionals, as well as with their own dynamic peers, throughout the Summit.
Brandeis University is the primary base for the conference, offering participants a real taste of college life while also enabling them to take in the sights and sounds of nearby Boston. Although the Summit runs an intensive educational program, delegates will also have access to the rich cultural life of the Greater Boston area, with events at prestigious institutions throughout the local region. Delegates travel to all off-site events in air-conditioned motor coaches, supervised by Summit staff.
The safety, security and educational outcomes for our students are of primary consideration in the planning of all Summit activities.
Delegates meet regularly in small groups. The resident faculty to student ratio is 1:17. Delegates are supervised both on campus and during all excursions and off-site activities. There is limited leisure time; the delegates are kept engaged all day, with events, activities, and meetings with their small groups.
The Summit staff includes two dedicated program managers, professional curriculum designers, an experienced logistics team, and talented educators. The resident staff to student ratio is approximately 1:14.
All delegates must reside in Brandeis' secure residence halls that are monitored at all times by adult faculty members.
