Notifying our community of a positive coronavirus test

March 29, 2020

Dear Brandeis Community,

I am writing to let you know that Brandeis was notified late yesterday by public health officials that a second member of our community, a staff member, has tested positive for COVID-19. Based on information we received from public health officials, we have no reason to believe that this case is related to the case of the first person who tested positive. We are keeping both of them and their families in our thoughts.

Brandeis has worked together with public health officials to notify members of our community who were identified as "close contacts" to this staff member, none of whom are students. Those close contacts have been instructed to self-quarantine at home for 14 days and monitor themselves for symptoms. If you have not been contacted, that means you were not identified by public health officials as a close contact. Public health officials set about a thorough case contact tracing process that involves reviewing an individual's interactions during a determined period in which they could have possibly infected people. For anyone who was identified as a close contact, Brandeis has already affirmed it will provide paid leave to employees who must self-quarantine or care for someone who is quarantined, above and beyond any accrued vacation or sick time. Brandeis is committed to doing all we can to protect the health and safety of all our community members.

As coronavirus cases increase in Massachusetts, we must anticipate that more members of our community will be affected. Going forward our procedure will be to work with public health officials to notify any close contacts among our campus community, and track cases on our coronavirus website. If you have left campus, are recommended for a coronavirus test, and have manifested symptoms before leaving campus or within two days of leaving campus, we ask that you or a caregiver notify the Brandeis Health Center at 781-736-3677 (Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) or 781-239-1948 (on evenings or weekends).

Sincerely,

Diana Denning
Administrative Director, Brandeis Health Center
