Mariia Makarova was the 2020-23 Fulbright Russian TA. She holds a degree in linguistics from Khakassia State University and has taught ESL in Russia. She came from Khakassia, a region of Russia located in the southwestern part of Eastern Siberia.
I am very grateful that this academic year at Brandeis brought me a lot of new experiences. I was involved in both academic and extracurricular life: I taught Russian language to American students; studied undergraduate subjects; delivered a presentation about Russian youth volunteer movements; organized Russian teas, on-campus Russian cultural events (such as the Russian table at the Global Bazaar and Russian culture week events), Student Talent Show, Russian Crafts Night and Cooking Night.
I also took part in volunteering projects, helping immigrants in Florida and collecting oral histories of Russian-speaking elders at Hebrew Rehabilitation Center in Roslindale, Massachusetts. All these wonderful opportunities helped me learn more both about the U.S. and the American culture, and I am grateful that I had many opportunities to share my own culture with American students.
