Captioning Recorded Video with Echo360

Note: To link your UNET account to Echo360, create an activity in LATTE (such as a label, forum, etc.) and then click on the Echo360 button in the toolbar.
If you do not use LATTE and wish to connect your UNET to Echo360, please contact MTS.

How do I find my video?

Enter your Brandeis UNET email address at Echo360.org

Sign in with your UNET account on the Brandeis single-sign-on page

When the screen refreshes, you should be in your Echo360 Library. Any videos that were recorded to the cloud while logged in with the same UNET account in Zoom should automatically appear in your Echo360 Library.
Other videos may be uploaded to Echo 360
How do I upload a video from my computer?

Go to Echo 360 and sign in with your Brandeis UNET login.

Click the "Create" button and choose "Upload Media."

Use the file selector that appears to find the video file on your device or in any of the provided linked depositories (Drop Box, Box, Google Drive, OneDrive — you will need to connect your accounts if prompted)

Once the file has been located and added to the file selector, click Upload. You may upload more than one video at a time. The larger the file(s) the longer upload will take. Slow internet speeds will also slow the upload process.

Once the video finishes uploading, you will receive a "success" notification that your file is now available in Echo360. The video will take time to process before you can watch it or do any editing.
Echo360 will provide machine-generated captions for all videos in your library
Where do I find my auto-captions?
Once your video has been uploaded to Echo360, it will quietly process for machine-generated captioning. Unfortunately, the system does not always indicate that this process is underway. However, if you return to your video in Echo360 after a few hours or perhaps the next day and click "edit transcript," you should see an interactive transcript that has been generated.

How do I use the Echo360 transcript/caption editor?

Open the page for your video.

Click "Edit transcript" under the video pane.

On the transcript editing view, click "Edit Transcript." This will allow you to directly edit the text shown in the interactive transcript. Note there is a useful find and replace tool available to aid in editing. Echo360 will underline words it thinks you may want to investigate for accuracy. You may also click on the speaker box to update the names of speakers, if appropriate.

Click "Save as a New Version," then "Apply."

When the screen refreshes, you should see buttons on the upper right. Click "Apply to CC," then "Apply." You should now be able to watch the video with captions in the preview window by clicking the CC button. When you add your video to Latte, the captions should be available.
Can I use caption files from other platforms?
You may also upload captions (.VTT files) created elsewhere using the upload button or export your edited captions for use in other platforms (.VTT files are for closed captions file, .TXT gives you a plain text file for creating a full text transcript).
Videos, including Zoom, can be pulled from Echo360 directly in LATTE.
Adding an activity or other asset to LATTE will produce the LATTE editor in your editing screen. The first button in the editor is for Echo360. It looks like a blue triangle within a blue circle.
How do I pull my Echo360 video and captions into LATTE?

Click the Echo360 button in the LATTE editor.

You should see your Echo360 Library; choose the video you wish to add to LATTE.

You will have options for video size, start time, autoplay, automate and link. Please do not select "autoplay" as it is not accessible. Otherwise, use the options as you wish and click "Insert" to add your video to LATTE.

When you save the activity and return to your course, you should see either the video frame or a link to the video depending on your chosen preferences. If your video has captions in Echo360, the captions should also show in LATTE.
Tips for saving time on captions:

Have speakers directly microphoned.

Have speakers speak slowly and distinctly.
