2024 Leonard Bernstein Festival of the Creative Arts

March 26, 2024

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

I’d like to invite you all to experience the upcoming Leonard Bernstein Festival of the Creative Arts, which will take place at various venues across campus from Saturday, April 6 through Sunday, April 14.

This year’s festival will commemorate Brandeis' 75th anniversary, with art and performances by distinguished guests and community members that connect with our founding Jewish values, including innovation in education, repairing the world, and community. There will be something for everyone, from music, to digital art, to multicultural celebrations, to dance, and beyond.

Most of the events are free and open to the public. A few include:

  • Super Sunday: an afternoon of short performances and art experiences for all ages, on April 7
  • “Fragments,” a concert by Yoni Avi Battat ‘13, who draws on Middle Eastern musical forms, with lyrics in Hebrew, Arabic, English, and Yiddish, on April 13
  • Two artist-led programs that reflect on the Holocaust: a talk on photography and justice on April 9, and a Day of Remembrance beginning on the evening of April 9 and taking place throughout the day on April 10

I encourage you to visit the festival website for a complete listing of events.

Of course, as we reflect upon our 75th anniversary, we remember that the Festival of the Arts honors its founder, the great American composer, conductor, and Brandeis faculty member, Leonard Bernstein, and his incredible legacy as an artist, educator, activist, and humanitarian. Bernstein first instituted the festival in 1952, as a way to celebrate Brandeis’ first graduating class; many successful festivals have followed since.

I hope to see you around campus celebrating this remarkable individual’s legacy, and the legacy of all of the gifted artists who have passed through our campus in our 75 years, by experiencing this year’s events.

Sincerely,

Ron Liebowitz
