Editorial
Integrated Design uses AP style on all projects. Use the CMS Guide for style shortcuts and Brandeis-specific styles. These apply to online and print projects. The online AP Stylebook can be accessed using Brandeis login credentials. Please note that the messaging for all projects should align with Brandeis’ brand narrative and The Framework for the Future.

Writing
- Write with active verbs. Avoid the passive voice.
- Eliminate repetition.
- Eliminate extra words. Be succinct.
- Review the text from the point of view of a reader who doesn’t know anything about the topic or event. Clarify anything that might be missing or confusing.
Fact-Checking
- Fact-check all proper nouns (names, places, titles, etc.), addresses, phone numbers, etc.
Websites and Email
- Check that all URLs point to live web pages. Shorten printed URLs by omitting “https://” or “https://www.”
- Check that email addresses are accurate.
Style
- Check the following for consistency: verb tenses, names, times, dates.
- Check that year spans within the same century are written this way: 2010-19, not this way: 2010-2019. Otherwise: 1997-2005.
- Headings/titles: Capitalize prepositions and conjunctions of four or more letters. Capitalize the verb “to be.”
- Phone numbers: Use hyphens. For instance: 781-736-3500
- Slashes: No space on either side of a slash.
- Ampersands: If a business includes an ampersand in its proper name, use it. Otherwise, spell out all ampersands as “and,” including in book titles, names of Brandeis entities and names of Brandeis events.
- Superscript: Do not use superscript. Correct: 20th century. Incorrect: 20th century.
- Names: In bios, etc., use the full name on first reference and last name after that.
- Academic degrees: Refer to someone receiving “a BA” rather than “his/her BA.” According to AP style, “Dr.” should only be used for someone with an MD. Refer to the “doctor” listing in the AP Stylebook for other options. If “PhD” is used, do not include periods.
Formatting
- Check document for spelling and double spaces. All sentences should be separated by a single space.
- If the text includes the name of someone and their Brandeis graduation year, set the year on the same line as the name, or at least the last name.
- Correct: Daniel Smith ’90
- Incorrect: Daniel Smith
’90
