Now trending: Looking for something to read?

Traveling over the holidays and looking for something to read? Our associate director Shayna Weiss recommends And the Bride Closed the Door, by Ronit Matalon.
Matalon was a groundbreaking Mizrahi author, journalist, and social activist. She spoke at the Schusterman Center in 2015.
Matalon's final novel is the account of a bride who has refused to leave her bedroom the day she is due to be wed. As the cast of characters tries to convince the bride to leave her self imposed seclusion, the work deftly explores the oddities of contemporary Israel and modern romance in a short, smart, and funny tale.

The novel was awarded Israel's prestigious Brenner Prize the day before Matalon's death at age 58 in 2017.
