La Fuerza de Brandeis: The Latinx Portrait Project, by Shelley Polanco ‘24
We invite you to view La Fuerza de Brandeis: The Latinx Portrait Project, by Shelley Polanco ‘24. This powerful exhibit features portraits of members of the Brandeis community, including students, faculty, and staff, who identify as Latinx, celebrating their shared heritage, as well as each of their cultural identities. In her artist statement, Polanco shared that she has received a strong education at Brandeis, while experiencing isolation from her Dominican culture: “With my photography, I wanted to celebrate people of Latin American descent and expand this campus’ vocabulary. While some people may also be Hispanic, Caribbean, or South American, these are not synonymous.”
Through her photography in this exhibit, Polanco welcomes future Latinx Brandeisians: “At this predominantly white institution, these self-determined images of Latinx Brandeisians will be familiar faces for the future generations to come. These photographs prove that Latinx culture not only exists at Brandeis, but will continue to thrive because we know and remember one another.”
Please visit the exhibit on Level 1 of Goldfarb Library during building hours. Additional photography by Shelley Polanco can be viewed on her website, Shot By Shell Photography.
