Brandeis Library Announces Eliminated and Reduced Overdue Fines
In an effort to reduce financial hardship on students and improve user experience, the Brandeis Library has announced new borrowing policies that include eliminated and reduced fines on certain collections and equipment.
General Collection
The Library has eliminated overdue fines on the general circulating collection. General collection materials include items in the main stakes, media browsing, closed stacks and storage, and the recreational reading collection.
Although there are no overdue fines, the Library will continue to charge replacement fines for lost materials.
Equipment
Overdue fines on circulating equipment have also been reduced in order to encourage prompt returns while also reducing financial burden to support a more equitable environment. Information for laptops and equipment loans is available in the borrowing section of the Library website.
Food for Fines
In addition to eliminated general collection fines and reduced equipment fines, the Library has partnered with the Brandeis Food Pantry to establish a new Food for Fines program. Patrons can pay their overdue fines with a donation of non-perishable food or hygiene items that will go to the Brandeis Food Pantry.
Each item donated is worth $5 toward Library fines. We will be happy to accept additional donations at any time if you have them.

Amnesty Waivers Increased
The Library has moved to a new amnesty model that gives borrowers one waiver per semester. When a waiver is given, staff explain the borrowing policies and how returning items late has an impact on others in the community.
Students seeking an amnesty waiver must reach out to Public Services staff through email at borrowing@brandeis.edu. If a second waiver is requested, the borrower must schedule an appointment with Brenda Cummings or Matthew Sheehy before another waiver is provided.
