Inspired by the cover story in Brandeis Magazine’s Summer 2016 issue, Edward Friedman shares this anecdote: “While at Brandeis, I went with a carful of fellow students to a Lenny Bruce performance in Manhattan. I think I can still recite entire Lenny Bruce routines.” Edward is emeritus professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research focused on the area of stress and coping. He was the founding director of the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. On May 20, 2016, Edward was an official guest of Tsai Ingwen, the president of Taiwan, at her inauguration in Taipei. He has known Taiwan’s foreign minister for 35 years and has been a good friend of the Taiwanese national security adviser for some 40 years. The newest love of Edward’s life, grandson Nazar Friedman El Baltimy, was born on Dec. 28, 2015. Chuck Israels, wife Margot and daughter Jessica live in Portland, Oregon. Chuck’s jazz orchestra, which performs monthly in Portland and occasionally in other places, has just released its third CD, “Garden of Delights.” Margot and Jessica teach voice and sing in various professional groups. Jessica also directs two choirs. Chuck writes, “Spent an interesting lunch catching up with Marty Peretz, H’89, when I was in New York a couple of months ago. Remarkable how many of us are still fully functioning. Eighty feels like the new 50.”
