Sofia Chevez
Sofia has always been a writer. As a child, her pastime was writing about everything she saw, experienced, and felt—it was therapeutic for her. While she was originally on the pre-vet track, Sofia ultimately decided to change her area of study, and she is thrilled to be learning about things she is passionate about as an English and Creative Writing double major.
Sofia doesn’t just study English and Creative Writing, though: she has an Art History minor as well! Adding this area of study to her academic path has allowed her to engage in visual analysis efficiently and see beyond the written medium of any work she is reading in her English or Creative Writing classes. The artist created the art for a reason; understanding that reason gets to the heart of who the artist is and why the piece is so powerful. Sofia has come to realize more and more that art and writing are not very different. Writing is, in fact, a form of art, requiring the same emotional intelligence and awareness as painting or sculpting.
Sofia reads all kids of genres and authors, but one author who particularly inspires her is Edgar Allen Poe. She and her dad read Poe’s stories together when she was younger, and they would always pause to marvel at his story-telling. Continuing to read Poe’s stories over the years has inspired Sofia to find her own voice in her writing. She is still trying to figure out what genre she would like to specialize in as a writer, but she feels that creative nonfiction could be promising for her.
In the future, Sofia hopes to work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in her hometown of NYC. She would love to give tours and help edit descriptions for the art. Additionally, Sofia is aiming to work for a publishing house and possibly publish her own book!
