ENACT at the National Conference of State Legislatures Annual Legislative Summit

Aug. 9, 2017

Earlier this month, more than 5,000 state legislators, legislative staff, government officials, business representatives, educators and others interested in public policy from across the United States and abroad gathered in Boston for the annual Summit of the National Conference of State Legislatures. And ENACT was there.

ENACT Faculty Fellow Rob Glover (University of Maine), ENACT course alumni Marian Gardner ’18 (ENACT student delegate) and Jamanae White (University of New Hampshire at Manchester), and former ENACT at Brandeis teaching assistant Cynthia Tschampl (senior research associate, Heller School) joined ENACT Academic Program Director Melissa Stimell, Ethics Center Director Dan Terris and ENACT Coordinator David Weinstein to represent ENACT at the annual meeting, held this year at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.

ENACT's distinguished legislator, Massachusetts state Rep. Jay Kaufman ’68, MA’73, introduced ENACT to colleagues from across the United States during various summit sessions.

ENACT representatives met with legislators from states that currently host ENACT courses, as well as with others who are interested in supporting the ENACT model of engaging young people in state-level legislative change based on a shared commitment to knowledge, cooperation, justice and integrity.

"ENACT offers the promise of inspiring and supporting students across the nation to become engaged citizens, even as they inform and empower their own legislatures," said NCSL Executive Director William T. Pound in an endorsement letter.

"NCSL is the nation's premier organization for state legislatures and their staffs, bringing legislators and legislative staff together for mutual learning and a sharing of best practices, even while serving to advocate for state legislatures in the relationship between state capitals and the nation's capital in Washington, D.C. The strength and success of both NCSL and ENACT can and should be measured in terms of the efficacy and empowerment of tomorrow's citizens and leaders, and we are prepared and look forward to continuing the partnership with ENACT to that end."
