Hidden, Forgotten, Remembered? Jewish Child Survivors of Mixed Ethnic Background in Poland After the Holocaust

Undergraduate Project

Project Information

Holocaust scholar and HBI Research Associate, Dr. Joanna Michlic of UCL Institute of Education, London, researches Jewish childhood, family history, and postwar memory in Eastern Europe. Her current project examines the experiences and postwar memories of Jewish children of mixed Jewish and non-Jewish parentage in Poland during and after the Holocaust. It explores how gender, family structures, secrecy, rescue, stigma, and postwar antisemitism shaped their survival strategies, identities, and long-term memory narratives. Among the topics she is considering are motherhood, caregiving, and gendered survival strategies; the experiences of Jewish mothers, non-Jewish mothers, and female rescuers;  aspects of hiding, passing, and family separation; and the role of women in children’s postwar memory and identity formation.

Dr. Michlic is looking for an intern to assist in the preparation of scholarly and public facing publications related to this topic. The intern will carry out archival and internet research including locating sources, identifying testimonies, scholarly literature and digital archives  (30%); bibliographic work and library research involving compiling and organizing references, checking citations (30%);  editing and proofreading, especially footnotes (15%); translation and data organization from German and/or possibly Italian (20%);  and helping to prepare short outreach or digital content for a public audience (5%).
