Mothers and Nation: Maternal Organizing in Israel and the Jewish Diaspora

Undergraduate Student Project

Project Information

Dr. Edith Pick, HBI Scholar in Residence and Brandeis Postdoctoral Associate, is carrying out research exploring how mothers organize at the intersection of gender and nationalism, in Israel and the Jewish diaspora. Drawing on contemporary examples of maternal activism, it asks how women’s voices as mothers reveal diverse relationships with national identities and narratives, militarism, and the Jewish state, and how mothers’ groups position themselves in relation to feminism, including its liberal, radical, and anti-feminist forms. The project examines how political visions and organizational models travel transnationally between Israel and the Jewish diaspora.

She is looking for an intern to assist with internet and library research focused on contemporary civil society in Israel and the Jewish diaspora, as well as theoretical perspectives on Jewish motherhood and nationhood.
