FMLA for Tenure-Track Faculty
Postponement of Tenure Decision Owing to Family and Medical Leave Policy (FMLA)
Policy
Per the Faculty Handbook, a faculty member who has been granted medical or parental leave for a minimum of seven weeks may postpone a scheduled tenure decision for two semesters. According to the Brandeis University Family and Medical Leave Policy for Faculty, such postponements may not exceed a total of four semesters. The faculty member must notify the appropriate Dean of such a postponement by May 1 of the calendar year in which the department is scheduled to begin its deliberations (or by Nov. 1 for off-cycle faculty). Faculty research leave after tenure will be delayed depending on the length of extension requested.
Process
Tenure-track faculty receive an email prompt early in the spring prior to their tenure review year to prepare the tenure dossier. Included in the prompt is a reminder of the option to postpone the tenure decision based on approved FMLA leaves. The faculty member will make a written request to the appropriate Dean.
