Sad News: Professor Emeritus Robert Stevenson, Chemistry

June 26, 2019

Dear Colleagues,

I write to share the delayed sad news of the passing of Professor Emeritus Robert Stevenson on June 12, 2019, at the age of 91. He is survived by his beloved wife Hilda (Moran) Stevenson, and his children Peter Stevenson of Lexington and Elizabeth Stevenson of Waltham.

Robert Stevenson was born in December 1927 in Scotland where he grew up and went to school. He came to the US to Harvard University on a Merck International Fellowship for Chemical research. It was there that he met his future wife Hilda from Bogota, Colombia. He was hired in the department of chemistry at Brandeis in 1957, tenured in 1960, and promoted to full professor in 1966. He retired as professor emeritus of organic chemistry in 1993. He published over 160 papers and mentored dozens of students. As noted in his obituary outside of his work at Brandeis he focused on his family life and his enjoyment of sports and music.

Robert was a valued member of the Brandeis community over many decades and will be greatly missed.

Sincerely,

Lisa M. Lynch, Provost
