George Ross

George Ross

George Ross joined Brandeis in 1970 and retired in 2009. He taught in the Sociology and Politics departments, and for the International and Global Studies Program.

He is presently ad personam Chaire Jean Monnet at the University of Montreal-McGill Center for Excellence on the European Union, Canada (an appointment granted by the European Union to honor distinguished international contributions to the understanding of European integration). He served as chair of the European Union Studies Association (2003-2005), acting director of the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies at Harvard University, executive director of the European Union Center at Harvard University, chair of the Council for European Studies (1990-1997), and director of the Center for German and European Studies at Brandeis (1998-2008).

George is an editor of French Politics Culture and Society, Sociologie du Travail, Contemporary European Politics, and the Journal of European Integration. His honors and awards include the title of officier of the French Ordre des Palmes Academiques, a Chaire Francqui from the Belgian Fondation Francqui, two Fellowships from the German Marshall Fund of the USA, and two Fulbright research fellowships.

His current research interests include European politics, the political economy of the European Union, changing democracy in advanced industrial societies, and globalization and social structures. His most recent books include What's Left of the Left? edited with James Cronin and James Shoch (Duke University Press, 2010) and The European Union and its Crises : Through the Eyes of the Brussels Elite (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011).
