Ronald Kronish, P’99, reports on his recent Zoom calls with Everett Fox, Harris Gleckman, Allan Goroll, Sam Heilman and David Soloff: “We have had nostalgic discussions about our lives as Brandeis students, remembering meaningful people, professors and events, including the struggle for civil rights, the discussions about racism, the demonstrations against the Vietnam War, and the campus visits by such Israeli leaders as David Ben-Gurion and Yigal Allon.” In April, Jon Landau, H’19, co-produced the Jersey 4 Jersey benefit for the New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund. The broadcast included performances by Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Halsey, Charlie Puth and SZA. Roger W. Smith writes that he is busy in semiretirement as an independent scholar and writer, working on articles about the Russian-American sociologist Pitirim A. Sorokin (who once spoke at Brandeis) and a Russian-to-English translation of one of Sorokin’s early books. Roger’s blog, rogersgleanings.com, includes several posts about a Trump administration policy he regards as a grievous human-rights abuse: the separation of migrant children from their parents. Eric “Ric” Uslaner retired from the University of Maryland as a professor of government and politics after teaching there since 1975. He is still active in research and is currently writing a book. He also recently co-edited two books, wrote a paper for the United Nations Development Programme on education’s effect on development, and wrote two papers for a Chinese think tank on the 2020 American elections. Steven Volk reports he used the pandemic shutdown to co-author “The Post-Pandemic Liberal Arts College: A Manifesto for Reinvention,” which explores what has gone wrong in liberal arts colleges and how to set it right. It was published by Belt Publishing in September.
