MATLAB is a multi-paradigm numerical computing environment and proprietary programming language developed by MathWorks. MATLAB allows matrix manipulations, plotting of functions and data, implementation of algorithms, creation of user interfaces, and interfacing with programs written in other languages.

Adobe Spark is an integrated suite of media creation applications for mobile and web developed by Adobe Systems. It comprises three separate design apps: Spark Page, Spark Post, and Spark Video.

H5P is a free and open-source content collaboration framework based on JavaScript. H5P is an abbreviation for HTML5 Package, and aims to make it easy for everyone to create, share and reuse interactive HTML5 content.

Padlet is a free online tool that is best described as an online notice board. Padlet can be used by students and teachers to post notes on a common page. The notes posted by teachers and students can contain links, videos, images and document files.

Animation
Maya is a professional 3d modeling and animation program. While it has a steep learning curve, the program has been used in many professional contexts, including game development and film. Maya is also very extendable; it has an internal scripting language that allows you to write your own plugins and use plugins designed by other users.

Photoshop is our recommended all-purpose tool for image editing. You can use it for most any graphics project, whether it be designing a poster, touching up old photos, creating web graphics, or doing professional painting via a tablet.

Lightroom is a useful tool for adjusting exposure and applying filters to your raw camera footage—without having to learn Photoshop first. You can also work directly with your raw camera files; no import or conversion is necessary.

When you need vector-based design tools, Illustrator is the program to use. The program is very similar to Photoshop, making it easy to learn. Its vector format allows you to scale any illustrations you make with perfect clarity, making Illustrator ideal for logo design.

We use Finale primarily for notation (i.e. writing and preparing scores). The program also supports MIDI input via our in-lab MIDI keyboards and audio output via Garritan, Native Instruments, and Miroslav Philharmonik, though more advanced audio production should be done in a professional sequencer such as Logic Pro (below).

Logic Pro is our recommended music sequencer. It supports audio and MIDI recording, sequencing, and looping. The program also has a "movie" view mode, in which you can create your audio alongside an integrated video player (ideal for film scoring).

After Effects is the perfect application for video compositing, post-processing and special effects. Traditionally used after all other editing is finished, you can also use it to "live-edit" your clips in Adobe Premiere—before you've even finished your movie.

SpeedGrade is a powerful tool for color correction. Used in conjunction with Adobe Premiere, you can "live edit" your color corrections without having to export your movie first.

Adobe Media Encoder allows you to convert between a variety of file formats. It supports image, video, and audio conversions, and is much faster than the leading competitor (Compressor).

ScreenFlow is a screencasting and video editing software for the macOS operating system. It can capture the audio and video from the computer, edit the captured video, add highlights or annotation, and output file types such as AIFF, GIF, M4V, MOV, and MP4.

HandBrake allows you to rip DVDs onto your computer. It is most useful for ripping specific chapters of movies which can then be imported into Premiere for use as part of a video editing project, or uploaded to our Ensemble Video server for class streaming.
