I am reading the 2008 biography of writer and journalist Marie Syrkin by Carole Kessner ’53, P’80, G’15. The last section covers Syrkin’s years as a faculty member in the English department at Brandeis.

John Howard is the author of “Poor Joshua: The DeShaney Case and Child Abuse in America,” published in August by the State University of New York Press. John, a sociologist, is Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at Purchase College. Last year, Elaine Phillips Ostroff, P’80, G’13, was awarded an honorary PhD by Middlebury College for her efforts in sustaining social justice. Several of her family members are part of the Brandeis family, including her late husband, Earl, MA’73, P’80, G’13; her son, Joshua ’80, P’13; and her grandson, Jonah, PhD’13. Naima Prevots wrote an article titled “Memorial Day” in Ballet Review. It was inspired by her discovery of a scenario about slavery and the Civil War written by Lincoln Kirstein, co-founder of the New York City Ballet.
