Linda Burke provides math tutoring to students with disabilities and says she cherishes the relationships she forms with these young people. Richard Kopley, Penn State DuBois Distinguished Professor of English Emeritus, received the Lifetime Achievement and Service Award from the Poe Studies Association at the 2018 International Poe and Hawthorne Conference in Kyoto, Japan. An author and literary scholar with expertise in classic American literature, Richard is a foremost expert on Edgar Allan Poe. His latest book is “The Formal Center in Literature: Explorations From Poe to the Present.” Mark Seth Lender, MA’74, is a producer for wildlife content and “explorer in residence” at “Living on Earth,” on Public Radio International. His pieces are aired monthly. He’s written a children’s book, “Smeagull the Seagull,” about a wild herring gull that’s been knocking on his door to be fed for the past 12 years. “He figured out that striking the glass with his beak was an excellent way to get our attention,” Mark explains. “Not only does he knock, he knocks with the rhythm and forcefulness of a human being at your door on a mission of importance.” Bruce Phillips and Toni Frederick ’74 report they are now the proud Saba and Savta of Sydney Booke, who lives in Los Angeles. Bruce says he recently visited Barry Elkin. Reid Selden is retiring from his group pediatric practice on Long Island and moving to the Charleston, South Carolina, area, where his children and grandchildren live. He says the new house will have plenty of room for anyone who wants to visit. Susan Townsend has retired from a 40-year career at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. She enjoys spending time with her family, and is active in immigrant support and antiracism initiatives.
