Simon Albury, chair of Campaign for Broadcasting Equality, was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). He says, “My year at Brandeis, in the midst of the civil rights movement, shaped my political perspective and left me with a flickering passion for social justice. It started the process that led to this award, 53 years later.” Elaine Comparone has several videos on YouTube, the latest demonstrating music on three different harpsichords. A Viennese film company used clips from her recording of Scarlatti sonatas for “Angelo,” a movie about an 18th-century African boy kidnapped by Europeans and groomed to become a courtier. Beri Gilfix, MA’66, P’97, is grieving the sudden loss of her partner of nearly 40 years, Charles McDew, in April 2018. He spent a semester at Brandeis in 1963 when he was chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Beri is writing his biography, which she hopes to publish next year. Helen Alpert Goldenberg says she enjoys living near Fort Lauderdale, Florida: “No snow to shovel!” Last year, she went on her traditional summer road trip, visiting relatives and friends in the Northeast. She also took a boat cruise on the Columbia and Snake rivers in Washington and Oregon.
