J.P. Dessel has been elected president of the W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research, in Jerusalem. Elizabeth Jaffee, a cancer immunotherapy expert, joined the scientific advisory board of Dragonfly Therapeutics, which works to bring breakthrough treatments to patients with hematological and solid-tumor cancers. After 28 years of practicing gastroenterology in Fairfield, Connecticut, Alan Landau, P’17, and his wife, Andrea, are moving to Burlington, Vermont, where he has joined Vermont Gastroenterology. Jeff Menkin has been appointed a U.S. immigration judge in Falls Church, Virginia. An attorney with the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., since 1991, he most recently served as senior counsel for national security at the Office of Immigration Litigation. His earlier posts included working in the Office of Special Investigations, which investigated, denaturalized and deported World War II-era Nazi collaborators living in the U.S. Richard A. Morgan, an expert in gene therapy and oncology, joined pharmaceutical company Editas Medicine as senior vice president of immunogenetics. He has more than 30 years of leadership in the life sciences industry and at federal research agencies, including the National Institutes of Health. After 14 years with Goodwill Central Texas, Roberta Schwartz is planning to move to Perth, Australia, by the end of the year. Frank Segall, P’11, business law chair at Burns & Levinson in Boston, was named a Cannabis Trailblazer by the National Law Journal for creating the Cannabis Business Advisory Group, designed to help clients deal with regulatory matters and other aspects of the cannabis industry. Glen Shear, past president of the Brandeis Israel Alumni Club, is chief financial officer of an Israeli-managed global cannabis platform. He previously helped build Garden Remedies, a vertically integrated medical marijuana operation in Massachusetts. He is also a pop art painter. Robert Smilg thanks his Brandeis friends for helping him remake his life after his mother’s death at nearly 100 years old in 2017. He will take early retirement this spring.
