Hi, I'm Eric Chasalow, the Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and I'm very pleased today to be able to tell you about a new set of opportunities for PhD students and faculty in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Creative Arts at Brandeis.

The Andrew W Mellon Foundation recently awarded Brandeis a $750,000 grant over the next four years to fund a program called the "Connected PhD." The Connected PhD will provide grants to PhD students for professional development projects and faculty for curricular innovation. Specifically the program seeks to help prepare our doctoral students for diverse career pathways PhD students may apply for grants that cultivate new competencies, secure new credentials, develop their abilities to be excellent teachers, have a community or public engagement aspect, and otherwise augment their professional development. The use of summer months for projects is especially encouraged. Faculty may apply for grants individually or in teams to develop new graduate courses or course modules that integrate professional development and scholarship. In addition to funding project costs these grants may fund course relief to free up faculty time.

Both with student and faculty projects, we will be looking for good models that might be repeated in future years. The possible kinds of projects under these grants will vary widely, so please read through the examples at the links below, attend our information sessions, and reach out to our staff. We really hope that everyone will apply.
