Language Empowering Action Project (LEAP) is a Waltham Group community service group focused on English language skills. We recognize the power of language and it’s ability to change people’s lives. Student volunteers in LEAP volunteer in English at Large and McDevitt Middle School's Family Literacy Program.
For our English at Large Program, volunteers lead English classes twice a week for learners. For our Family Literacy Program, volunteers serve as teachers assistants in the beginning, intermediate, and advanced level English classes. LEAP reaches immigrants from many different backgrounds that need English for multiple reasons such as applying to jobs, citizenship tests, and much more. LEAP provides opportunities to tutor non-English speaking adults in the Waltham community, either one-on-one or in-group settings.
In addition to English classes, tutors give the opportunity for learners to experience American culture and live a little more comfortably through common cultural gestures. This program is open to all students and no language requirement is necessary to volunteer.
