(she/her)

“Studying at Brandeis has changed my perspective on education and the world. I know now that I don’t have to follow just one path—I can be anything I want to be.”

From Bulgaria to Brandeis: Allie’s Journey as an International Student

For Allie L. ’27, finding the right university meant choosing a place where she could pursue her passions, feel supported, and connect with students from around the world. She found all of that — and more — at Brandeis.

“When I first arrived at Brandeis, I immediately felt like I belonged here,” Allie says.“Everyone was so welcoming and kind, and I felt like I could truly be myself. As an international student, it was reassuring to know there were others like me — students from different backgrounds, all pursuing their dreams far from home.”

Adapting to Life in the U.S.: Finding Community and Connection

Moving across the world for college is a major transition, but Allie quickly found a strong support system at Brandeis. While she missed her family and had to adapt to a new culture, she found a sense of belonging through student organizations like the Brandeis University Mock Trial Association and Education for Students by Students (ESS).

And then there were the small cultural surprises — like the way Brandeis students always carry huge water bottles!

“You don’t really see that in Bulgaria,” Allie laughs. “But I quickly got into the habit myself!”

Creating Her Own Path: A One-of-a-Kind Major

From day one, Allie knew she wanted to chart her own academic path. She worked closely with her advisor Professor Zachary Albert to design an Independent Interdisciplinary Major in Education Technology and Policy and Politics, a program that combines her passions in education, policy, and technology.

“I wanted to study the impact of technology on education policy making,” she explains. “My advisors supported me every step of the way, and I felt like I had the strongest support system.”

Working closely with her Brandeis advisor gave her the flexibility to combine multiple fields of study while ensuring she had the mentorship and guidance to succeed.

Turning Learning Into Action: Hands-On Experience

Brandeis isn’t just about learning in the classroom — it’s about applying knowledge in real-world settings. Through research and fellowships, Allie has explored career paths she never expected.

She works as a Research and Events Assistant at Brandeis’ Sillerman Center for the Advancement of Philanthropy, where she contributes to meaningful research projects. She’s also a Policy Fellow at the Paragon Policy Fellowship, focusing on digital accessibility.

“Brandeis has allowed me to pursue all of my passions — and even discover new ones! Thanks to the constant networking and career opportunities, I’ve explored internships I never even considered before.”

Advice for Future International Students: “You Are Not Alone”

For international students considering Brandeis, Allie has one key message: You are not alone.

“Being away from home can feel lonely sometimes, but there are so many international students on campus who understand what you're going through,” she says.

  • Get involved in clubs and organizations right away — that’s where you’ll find your community.
