Student Employment
The Office of Student Employment in SFS assists students and supervisors in all aspects of on-campus student employment and off-campus Federal Work-Study employment. Student Employment manages the hiring process for all hourly paid student employment positions at Brandeis.
Domestic and international undergraduate and graduate students may be employed through hourly Student Employment. Students must be matriculated in a Brandeis degree-granting program and enrolled at least half-time in classes to be eligible to work on-campus.
- Please note that only students with Federal Work Study or University Employment can be hired for on-campus jobs prior to October 1 of every academic year. Students without FWS will need to wait until after that date to apply for on campus positions.
- In order to obtain a job on campus, all students must be able to present original identification to the university that satisfies the requirements of Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification). The I-9 cannot be completed until after you have been hired for an on-campus job. Once you have been hired, schedule an appointment to complete part 2 of your I-9.
- Appropriate forms of identification include a U.S. Passport, an Alien Registration Card, a foreign passport with Employment Authorization or a driver's license with an original Social Security Card or birth certificate. You can see the full list of acceptable documents on the USCIS website.
Types of Employment
There are three main types of employment on campus: Federal Work-Study (FWS), University Employment, and Regular Hourly Student Employment. Although any student with a valid Social Security number may seek employment on campus, students who are awarded an FWS or University Employment allotment as part of their financial aid package are given priority for jobs until Oct. 1. If you were not awarded such an allotment, you are ineligible to seek employment until after this date.
Although the Office of Student Financial Services maintains a listing of available on-campus positions it cannot guarantee employment. It is the student's responsibility to secure and maintain a position.
Federal Work-Study
Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a need-based work program funded by Brandeis and the federal government. It is awarded to eligible domestic undergraduate students as part of their financial aid award.
Students may work at either an on-campus department or office, or at an approved off-campus community service agency.
The FWS allotment is not credited to the student's account. Students receive a weekly paycheck based upon actual hours worked. Any work allocation not earned by the end of the academic year will be forfeited.
University Employment
University Employment is a need-based work program funded entirely by the university and is awarded to eligible students as part of their financial aid award. Students may work at any on-campus department.
The University Employment allotment is not credited to the student's account. Students receive a weekly paycheck based upon actual hours worked. Any work allocation not earned by the end of the academic year will be forfeited.
Regular Hourly Student Employment
Regular Hourly Student Employment refers to any hourly, on-campus student job for students without FWS or University Employment. Students may work at any on-campus department or office, and will earn an weekly paycheck based on actual hours worked. These positions are fully funded by the department.
