Cultural Studies Track

Theory Courses

Two semesters:

  • MUS 101a and b (with 2-credit labs 102a and b) OR

  • MUS 103a and b (with 2-credit labs 104a and b)

Placement in the appropriate theory class is determined by exam at the first class meeting in MUS 101a or by appointment with the undergraduate composition track advisor, Professor Erin Gee

History Courses

Two semesters, selected from the following:

  • MUS 131a, 133b, or 135a

Electives

Six semesters:

  • Three courses in music AND

  • Three in music or related disciplines

At least one course must explore issues of globalization. See the list of approved electives in the University Bulletin

Private lessons (a full year of MUS 111/112) may be applied once only for major credit. MUS 1a, 2a, 5a,b, and 80-89 may not be counted as electives.

Track-specific Requirements

One semester:

  • MUS 3b Introduction to World Music

Ensemble Courses

Four semesters (taken in four different semesters):

  • Department ensembles MUS 80-89 or 116 (with or without credit)

Keyboard Proficiency

Keyboard proficiency must be demonstrated by exam by the end of the penultimate semester. Free instruction is available through the Basic Piano program. (no course credit). Check out the latest Keyboard Proficiency Practice Packet and feel free to email music@brandeis.edu if you have any questions.
