Many international students work on campus while pursuing graduate study. You should consult the International Students and Scholars Office
guidelines for international student employment before applying for on-campus positions. Please note that most international students are not eligible to work off-campus. All U.S. employers require employees to have an SSN. Please visit the
International Students and Scholars Office for information on obtaining an SSN as an international student.
PhD students who are serving as Teaching Assistants are part of the
SEIU, Local 509 PhD Student TA and TF union. Students serving as TAs are covered by the collective bargaining agreement during the time they are employed as a TA. Master’s and PhD students who are not serving in one of those capacities are not part of the bargaining unit and therefore not covered by the agreement. PhD students who are paid by the hour, graders and research assistants are also not covered by the agreement. For more information on SEIU, visit the
SEIU Local 509 website and their
Brandeis page.
