WGS Timeline at Brandeis

1975

Women's studies at Brandeis began with a single course offering.

1978

Undergraduate minor in women's studies was established.

1992

Graduate program began by offering a joint MA with departments across disciplines.

2003

Undergraduate major was established.

2005

Program’s name changed from Women's Studies to Women's and Gender Studies.

2010

Stand-alone MA program offered.

2011

Sexuality and queer studies minor offered.

2014

Program changed name to Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies.

2020

The Brandeis Board of Trustees votes to promote the program to a department. 

“My education in Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies has taught me to think in nuanced, creative and innovative ways as a Black feminist, activist and art historian. Thanks to the Brandeis program, I have a critical framework to engage power and justice that can be brought to any social issue or profession.”
