Permitted and Prohibited Items
Permitted Items
Appliances allowed in all student rooms:
- Microwaves no larger than .7 cu feet or 700 watts
- Mini fridges under 35 inches tall
- Coffee pots without exposed coils or heating elements
- Students may rent a MicroFridge unit that is dropped off directly to their room
Appliances permitted for use in kitchens and common rooms only (use in bedroom spaces is prohibited)
- Crock pots
- Rice cookers
- Instant pots/ multi-cookers/ air fryers
- Electric kettles/ water heaters (no exposed heating elements)
- Toaster/ Toaster Ovens
Here is a helpful table to better explain where the above mentioned items may be placed.
Prohibited Items
- Alcohol (in dry quads — East, Massell, Rosenthal, North and any rooms of students under age 21). Approved amounts of alcohol are listed in Rights and Responsibilities, Section 5.
- Cannabis and cannabis paraphernalia are not permitted on campus, regardless of age or medical cardholder status. More information is available in Rights and Responsibilities, Section 5.
- Illegal drugs, narcotics, controlled substances or prescription drugs without a prescription are prohibited on campus.
- With the exception of microwave ovens, cooking equipment of any kind is not allowed in individual student rooms or lounges. This includes hot plates, toaster ovens, indoor grills, hot pots, immersion heaters or any item with open coils.
- Firearms, explosives, knives (of any length), fireworks, nun-chucks, paintball guns or other articles or substances usable as weapons
- Hookahs
- Space heaters
- Air-conditioning units
- Hoverboards
- Drones
- Candles and incense, with the exception of registered religious candles. Decorative and/or scented candles are permitted if the wicks are removed.
- Pets, with the exception of fish in a 10-gallon or smaller tank. See Rights and Responsibilities regarding exceptions for service and emotional support animals.
- Halogen light bulbs
- Lava lamps
- Non-LED string lights
- Extension cords (please use UL-listed, multiple-outlet power strips instead)
- Flammable gases or fluids: This includes lighter fluid for grills, propane or butane for cooking, and jellied fuels for chafing vessels. It does not include personal-sized cigarette lighters.
- Bed risers, cinder blocks, headboards or loft kits
- Evergreen decorations (i.e., Christmas trees)
- Electric blankets
- Stolen items — University or public property, such as street signs, traffic cones, etc.
Personal Furniture Restrictions
- No personal mattresses or air mattresses are allowed in any residence hall.
- All furniture must fit into the given space without blocking the clear path to the exit. Whether an item poses a fire hazard is at the discretion of university staff.
- No soft furniture, such as couches or armchairs, are permitted. The only exceptions are foldable chairs or desk chairs.
- Particleboard and hardwood furniture should not be higher than 3 feet.
Hanging Items in Your Room/Suite/Apartment
- Items can only be secured to the walls of any residence hall room, common room, kitchen, or bathroom using the following approved means:
- 3M Command™ Strip - Non Damaging Hanging Products
- 3M Scotch Blue™ Painters Tape
- In Skyline, we ask students only use 3M Scotch Blue™ Painters Tape
- No walls or surfaces should ever be drilled into for any reason. If you have questions about hanging items please see a staff member before hanging them to avoid any repair costs or damage assessments at move-out.
