HBI Research Awards

The Hadassah-Brandeis Institute awards grants to support research or artistic projects in Jewish Women's and Gender Studies across a range of disciplines. Awards are made to graduate students, early career, and established researchers. The HBI Research Awards are funded by gifts from the HBI Board.

Size of Award

Junior grants up to $2,000 awarded to graduate students enrolled in recognized Ph.D. programs and new scholars – generally within two years of receiving a Ph.D.

Senior grants up to $5,000 awarded to established scholars and professionals. 


Open to applicants regardless of gender or religion.

Applications (in English) from outside the United States are welcome.

Submitting Your Proposal

1) Mail a hard copy of the proposal to:

2) Electronically submit your proposal. Do not email your proposal. Your proposal will be accepted only if we receive both hard and electronic copies by the deadline.

Review Process

Grants are awarded on the basis of excellence. All proposals are confidential and carefully reviewed by at least two outside experts, and receive further review from members of the HBI's Academic Advisory Committee. The HBI will notify applicants by email in January 2019 as to whether their proposal will receive funding. Funds will be distributed four to six weeks after receipt of required tax documentation, which must be received within six-weeks of notification of the Research Award.
