Obtain a Student Visa
All incoming students who are not U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents must have the appropriate student visa to study in the U.S. The most common student visas types are F-1 or J-1.
To obtain a student visa, students must follow the steps below.
Canadian Citizens: Canadian citizens are not required to apply for an F-1/J-1 visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate, but they are required to obtain a Form I-20 or Form DS-2019 Certificate of Eligibility to obtain F-1 or J-1 student status upon entering the United States.
Current Visa Wait Times: You can check the current visa wait times by reviewing this comprehensive spreadsheet with current visa wait times which is updated weekly.
Students Coming from a U.S. School: Students transferring a SEVIS Record from another U.S. institution to Brandeis should review the SEVIS Transfer-In for F-1 Visa Holders information.
Students in Other Visa Statuses: Students who hold an immigration status other than F-1/J-1, are required to submit a VIDOF, a copy of their valid passport, and must contact the ISSO for further guidance.
Students Coming with Dependents: Students who are coming with their dependents or will be joined later by members of their immediate family (spouse or unmarried child under the age of 21 years) should review the dependents information on the Overview of Student Visa Categories page.
