Brandeis is buzzing with excitement as another school year begins! New and old faces alike are settling in, connecting with friends, and figuring out how to fit everything into a schedule that includes sleep. It’s a tricky task, but one that shouldn’t come at the expense of your on-campus involvement outside of classes.

Easier said than done, right!? But one of the most essential components of college life is finding your place within the campus community. Building a campus community can help you develop life skills you’ll need for your future career beyond Brandeis.

Whether it’s through one of the more than 200 student-run clubs and organizations, making friends with your floormates, or finding those who identify similarly to you, there are many ways you can get involved at Brandeis. Once you do get involved, here are a few benefits you might find…

You’ll Learn About Yourself

Not only will you discover what you’re good at—generating ideas, managing people, staying organized, etc.—but you’ll also start to discover what you enjoy doing. Most of the time, it’s not until you step outside of the structured classroom setting that you truly begin to figure out what you love.

You’ll Broaden Your Horizons

Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone during college. Participating in campus clubs and organizations is a great way to “try before you buy” for particular fields, much like a traditional internship. You can gain firsthand knowledge of what to expect without the level of commitment a full-time job or even an internship would demand.

You’ll Develop Soft Skills

Soft skills—communication, collaboration, work ethic, etc.—are needed no matter what career you end up pursuing. While you can learn some of these skills during academic group projects, it’s not until you get placed in situations outside of the confines of the classroom that you can truly flex these muscles.

You’ll Build a Network

The community you build now will act as a built-in network throughout your career as your current peers will be entering the world of work right alongside you. If you build your connections within a campus or affinity group while at Brandeis, there might already be alumni waiting to help you out who you can connect with through the Rise Together Mentor Network!

When you are ready to transfer these experiences to a future post-college, our Career Team can help through one-on-one appointments that you can schedule right now!
