quoting from a 1/16/2015 email from Heather M Felton, reporting on the latest information from Human Resources:

The Health Care Act has changed the definition of what a temporary employee is. As of January 1, 2015 temporary employees are defined as anyone working FULL TIME for less than 90 days. If a full time employee is hired for more than 90 days they are eligible for health insurance and cannot be brought on as a temporary employee at Brandeis.

The law also defines temporary employees as those working PART TIME (less than 29 hours/week) for 6 months or less. We cannot change FT temps to PT temps at the 90 day mark, thereby keeping them non-benefits eligible, just to avoid paying for fringe benefits.

If you wish to hire an employee for 12 months or less who does not meet the above definition of a "temporary employee", we now need to hire these limited time employees as a "regular employee with an end date".
