Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC)

The Brandeis Materials Research Science and Engineering Center focuses on developing the relationship between biology and materials science using two complementary approaches. In a “bottom-up” approach, the center builds on its expertise in the understanding of relatively simple systems (liquid crystals, colloids, polymers). In a “top-down” approach, the center studies functional cellular components. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of their structure and properties, deconstructs these “devices” by modifying or removing constraints, to understand how the combination of materials and constraints leads to biological function.

Rosenstiel Basic Medical Sciences Research Center

The Rosenstiel Basic Medical Sciences Research Center is focused on the molecular mechanisms of human disease. The Center houses faculty from the Biology, Biochemistry, and Chemistry departments collaborating in interdisciplinary research to advance our knowledge of the genetic and molecular basis of human disorders, identifying new therapeutic targets and facilitating next-generation therapies.

Swartz Center for Theoretical Neurobiology

The Swartz Center for Theoretical Neurobiology at Brandeis University is devoted to training predoctoral students and postdoctoral researchers with strong analytic and computational backgrounds to apply these skills to neuroscience.

Volen National Center for Complex Systems

The Volen National Center for Complex Systems was formed for the purpose of studying the brain and intelligence. The Center is composed of faculty members who specialize in artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and a wide range of topics in neuroscience including experimental psychology, computational neuroscience, and cellular and molecular neurobiology (Research Philosophy | Faculty | Facilities).
