Community Building Events
The MKTYP is a program devoted to students’ growth and development as a lifelong and holistic endeavor. Throughout the academic year, there are monthly activities/events for first-year and current upperclassmen that range from academic enrichment workshops on how to declare a major/minor and events such as the Pieces of Me: Intersectional Storytelling to fun activities such as movie/trivia nights, the MKTYP Retreat, or wellness/mindfulness exercises. We also have annual events such as the Night of Inspiration and Closing Ceremony to celebrate our academic achievements. First-year students are also paired with a peer mentor to help answer questions about college life.
The community building events are meant to create a fun environment for students while also building a sense of belonging and community amongst the program and Brandeis.
Along with one-on-one advising sessions, there are weekly group meetings with the MKTYP students and staff. The meetings often consist of presentations to focus on academic success, life, and health wellness skills. We hold workshops on strategies and skills such as time management, purposeful reading, note-taking, test-taking, concept mapping, and writing as well as resiliency discussions on the impact of intersectionality, self-care, transformative circles, and research with a passion. Also, these meetings feature guest speakers to discuss campus opportunities such as study abroad, internships/career networking, student leadership, and academic fellowships.
Upon entry to the MKTYP, scholars of the program are members of Brandeis' campus community. As part of the Brandeis community, MKTYP scholars live on-campus and have access to over 250 student clubs and organizations. They are held to Brandeis’ expectations as outlined in the university's Rights and Responsibilities handbook. Students fully participate in campus life and become leaders of Brandeis' student clubs and organizations according to their preferences and interests.
MKTYP students and alumni hold leadership positions in the Student Union as the MKTYP holds one senate seat. Also, display leadership in Toxic dance group, Rebelle dance group, Brandeis African Student Organization, the Women of Color Alliance, Caribbean Culture Club, and many more student organizations and university departments.
